The Breakthrough of Snapchat

Post by arzina998 »

These are great times. At least, if you like change. Startups are conquering the world in no time. Where Twitter took two years to reach a million users, Dropbox did it in seven months, Instagram in two and a half months and Periscope in just ten days. The tipping point of success is being reached faster than ever. And that is especially true for unicorns: companies worth at least 1 billion dollars, such as Snapchat, Uber, Airbnb, Spotify and Netflix. This is how they became successful!

It was every teenager's nightmare: the Facebook app blocked on school iPads. The good news? It was Snapchat.

When students at an American high school were looking for an alternative to Facebook, one girl had a brilliant idea. She heard about this app from her aunt, the mother of one of the Snapchat founders. Where, unlike other social networks, a photo did not automatically remain findable and disappear again. Right after you had shared it. Her hotel email addresses classmates were wildly enthusiastic. Sharing photos during school hours, of which all evidence destroyed itself? That almost sounded too good to be true.

Peak during school hours
From that moment on, things took off. The app became a hit at one school after another. The news spread like wildfire. The founders had also noticed the pattern. They suddenly saw a huge peak between 9:00 and 15:00: school hours. It was the beginning of Snapchat's breakthrough.

Snapchat’s way of working is still characterized by one thing to this day: an obsession with privacy. Do you work at Snapchat? Then information is shared with you exclusively on a need-to-know basis. Asking questions about the strategy is a no-go. Nor about new features, by the way. When a new feature is launched, you hear about it just like everyone else: through the press. After the release. Or there is no announcement at all, and the new feature is discovered by chance by the users.
