In less than a year, only 0.3% of pages ranked in the top 10 for high-volume keywords

By looking at this chart, you might think that it takes 2-6 months on average to rank in the top 10 on Google.

But that conclusion isn’t valid here, because this data represents only the 5.7% of pages that were lucky enough to be in the top 10 in a given year — and nearly 95% of all the pages we studied did not make the top 10 during that time.

We also recalculated the numbers based on the keywords’ monthly search volume:

Obviously, you can rank for long-tail keywords in a very short time , while high-volume keywords take almost a year to get into the top 10.

But again, don’t forget that this data only applies to the “lucky” 5.7% of pages that ranked in the top 10 in one year. The vast majority of pages didn’t perform very well.

What does all this mean?
Nearly 95% of newly published pages fail to make it to the top 10 within a year. About 5.7% of pages make it to the top 10 in about 2-6 months, and the reason they make it to the top 10 in less than a year is most likely due to hard work and good knowledge of SEO, not luck.
