How important is the use of the domain name for a personal blog?

Post by Abdur12 »

Choosing a domain for your personal blog seems like a simple task at first glance. If your name is not available, you will have to choose between the alternatives.

In many cases, inspiration for a post comes from questions from readers. This time it was a question from one of the participants in the “Online Course for Bloggers” where I taught the first part yesterday (if you want to receive the recording of the seminar, sign up ).

I've noticed that this is a fairly common question that I get asked frequently and therefore deserves special attention in the form of a post. I was also faced with the same situation over 4 years ago when deciding on a name for this blog so I can also share my personal experience.

Advantages of using a personal name as a domain
Using your name as a domain is one of the first ideas that comes to mind when setting up a personal blog. It is the easiest way to relate the content you create to yourself.

Help to create a personal brand : that is why having the name included in the domain helps a lot when creating a personal brand. You are identified with your topic and with your name. They are two things that go together. In my case, many people (well, not that many) know this blog but they do not always relate it to “Carlos Bravo”.
Easy to remember : One of the main problems is communicating the name of your blog and having the other person remember it without further ado. In writing it is not complicated but when it comes to mentioning it in a conversation or on the phone it is much easier to remember “yourname.com” than “myblog’scoolname.net”.
It positions you better on Google : Have you ever searched for your name on Google? Come on, you can tell me about it… 😉We rarely appear in the first 10 positions. If you have a blog that also has your name on it, it is much easier to appear on the first page after a while. People who search for you on the Internet will be able to find you more easily and contact you.
