SMS is a cellular service that is presented in the form of short messages. The abbreviation SMS stands for Short Message Service, which in Russian means "short message service". This technology allows you to send important notifications and information alerts.

According to statistics, more than 90% of mobile phone subscribers have sent SMS at least once in their lives. Despite the growing popularity of social networks and instant messengers, the share of SMS in digital communication is still very large.

Every year, the entire population of the planet sends hundreds of billions of SMS. And it is not surprising, because SMS are universal: with their help, you can notify about the status of an order, congratulate on a birthday, schedule an important business meeting and even confess your love.

When did the short message service appear?
The Short Message Service (SMS) was created as part of the GSM Phase 1 standard.

GSM is a global standard for digital mobile cellular hong kong b2b leads communications, with channel division by time and frequency. GSM belongs to the second generation networks 2G. GSM Phase 1 supported a very low, by modern standards, message transmission speed – up to 10 kbps.

Now, in addition to GSM Phase 1, there are other modifications of the standard, such as GSM Phase 2 and GSM Phase 2+. Each modification is an extension of the previous one.

The implementation of the GSM Phase 1 standard began in 1989. Friedhelm Hillebrand (Deutsche Telekom), Kevin Holley (Cellnet), Ian Harris (Vodafone) are usually considered the “fathers” of SMS – these were the engineers who implemented the SMS service as part of the GSM Phase 1 standard.

In 1991, the following services were introduced based on the standard:

call forwarding;
call barring;
call waiting;
call hold;
global roaming.
In December 1992, the process of developing SMS as a new service was finally completed: this year, the British company Vodafone sent the first text message from a computer to a phone via the GSM network. This message contained just two words – Merry Christmas.

Due to the collapse of the USSR and the general economic downturn, Russia lagged behind the global trend by as much as 8 years - the first SMS to a subscriber's number from the Russian Federation was sent only in 2000.
