Let's look at the VPN tunneling process step by step. Since VPN is a tunnel, it has an input and an output point. On one side is the client, and on the other is the server. A VPN client is a program that runs on the user's device: an application on a phone or tablet, an extension in a web browser on a PC, etc. This client intercepts all data sent to the Internet (including logins, passwords, bank details and any other requests) and encodes them using built-in encryption functions. Then the encrypted traffic is redirected to the VPN server. This happens regardless of which site you initially accessed. Unlike using a regular connection, when the request is immediately sent to the server servicing a specific resource, VPN first processes your request on its remote computer. The VPN server receives information from the client, decrypts it and then redirects it to the public network, i.e. makes the same request, but on its own behalf. Eventually, the request reaches its final destination – the machine that hosts the website you want – it sees the IP address of the VPN server and responds without any problems. After receiving the response, the VPN server encrypts it and sends it back to the client. The client decrypts it, and you see the result of the request on your screen.
