A research team from the US has demonstrated a way to create a “super white” paint for covering buildings that reflects up to 98% of the light that hits the surface. Regular white paint reflects about 85% of solar radiation. If the new paint is used on roofs of buildings and other parts of the building, the costs of cooling the premises could be significantly reduced.



The effect is similar to when a person wears a white shirt instead of a black one on a warm summer day. The researchers see great potential in coating buildings with reflective white paint to cool down the interiors. The most effective white paints typically reflect about 85% of the sun's radiation. The rest is absorbed by the paint's chemical composition. Researchers have tried to improve white paint by making a few changes to the recipe.

The key ingredient in modern white, high-reflectivity solar paints is titanium oxide, which effectively reflects most visible and near-infrared light. However, there is a drawback. The paint absorbs both ultraviolet and violet light. The compound's ability to absorb ultraviolet rays makes it useful in sunscreen lotions, but this causes the ingredient to heat up when exposed to sunlight.

The researchers looked at alternative materials. The team succeeded in replacing titanium oxide with a compound called barite, along with the polymer tetrafluoroethylene, better known as Teflon. These ingredients help the paints reflect ultraviolet light.

The team also made further improvements to the paint's composition. The scientists reduced the number of polymer compounds in the paint that typically serve to absorb heat.
