Pneumonia, scarlet fever and polio tormented this girl in her childhood. Wilma Rudolph was literally lagging behind her playmates of the same age. Polio had left her left leg incapacitated.

Her body was anything but made for extreme sports. It wasn't until she was 11 that she was able to play basketball with her brothers. Before that, sport was hardly possible.
