Don't be afraid of it. I know it's regex and you might not be very comfortable with it, but it's very basic stuff, and once you do it, you'll feel like a data wizard, I guarantee it. The first time I did it, I stood up from my computer and said "yes" the first time it worked. Just play with it. It's going to be great. So you've got a little... what's the name of this thing? You've got a little up arrow there, a really bad medium dollar sign.

What it's saying is, if you have anything out there that's a weird medium, just write down all the crap that people have put out there over the years, all the weird mediums that don't make any sense at turkey number data all. Just put it all in there and then you can toss it into a bucket called paid social. You can do the same with referral traffic. Or, for example, it's really useful if a client is saying, "Okay, I want to know how this set of affiliate traffic compares to this set of affiliate traffic," so you can separate those into different buckets.

I've done this, for example, where we were looking at social data and we were comparing NFL teams for another tool, Rival IQ, for example. What I said was, okay, so these teams are in the AFC East, and these teams are in the AFC West. If I messed up and I said AFC East and West, please don't get mad at me in the comments. I promise I play fantasy football. I can't remember right now.

But you can combine different regions. For example, it's great for things like sales regions. So North America is the US plus Canada plus Mexico, if you're feeling generous. That's the politics of NAFTA. It really depends on what you want to do with those sales regions and what your data is like, what makes sense to you. The great thing about it is that you can change the data as you need to to make this reporting as easy as possible for you.
