To run for mayor you must meet some specific conditions:
It is necessary to have Brazilian nationality (born or naturalized).
Have an electoral domicile in the municipality where you intend to run for office for at least 1 year (place of residence or place with social or political ties).
Being literate (knowing how to read and write).
Enjoy the full exercise of political rights.
Be up to date with the Electoral Court.
Be at least 21 years of age (lesser japan mobile database requirement than for president).
Reservist certificate (in the case of males).
Be a member of a political party for at least 6 months before the elections.
Not be related up to the second degree (mother, father, son, daughter, grandfather, grandmother, grandson, granddaughter, brother and sister), nor by adoption or affinity (sister-in-law, brother-in-law, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law and daughter-in-law) with the current mayor.
What is the role of a mayor?
Collect, administer and apply municipal taxes.
Protect the municipality's historical and cultural heritage.
Ensure public transport and traffic organization.
Paving streets, preserving and building public spaces, such as squares and parks.
Search for agreements, benefits and assistance for the municipality you represent.
Present bills to the City Council, in addition to sanctioning or vetoing them.
Take care of the environment, the cleanliness of the city and basic sanitation.
Implement and maintain, in good working order, municipal health centers, schools and daycare centers, in addition to taking on the responsibility for school transportation for children.
The functions of the mayor (according to the constitution)
The mayor's functions were also established by the Brazilian Constitution of 1988 and are:
I - legislate on matters of local interest;
II - supplement federal and state legislation where applicable;
III - establish and collect taxes within its jurisdiction, as well as apply its income, without prejudice to the obligation to render accounts and publish balance sheets within the deadlines established by law.
