GeoGuessr is a geography game. The user is placed at a random point on Google Maps in Street View mode and must guess their location on the map. For most people, it's a fun way to pass the time, and for others, it's a chance to set a record and get on the leaderboard.
The previous four rounds of GeoGuessr went smoothly, and Gavin, better known as Chicago Geographer, even finished faster than planned. But where he's at now is a new challenge.
He knows he’s in a strange part of Utah, somewhere outside Logan, as evidenced by the signs on the blue trash cans along the street. It may seem like an obvious clue, but suburbs are usually the hardest places to navigate, with no unique buildings or landmarks nearby. Gavin wants to be sure of his decision, since he’s come this far.
He scans the street frantically, searching for any solid clue, and finally comes across a couple of signs with the highway number. He quickly locates the intersection on a map and makes his guess—it’s not far from the houses on East Main Street in Wellsville.
So Gavin set a new world record in November, completing a perfect speedrun in 4 minutes, 28.65 seconds. He accurately identified five random locations across the United States in less than five minutes. However, the leaderboard is updated almost daily.
On March 20, Gavin improved his world record by 15 seconds. Four kenya number data days later, Icn15 moved closer to the top spot with a time of 4:28. Apollobo is in third place with a time of 5:38.
GeoGuessr is a website created by Swedish IT consultant Anton Wallen in 2013 as an amateur project. Participants are virtually placed in a random location on a map around the world. GeoGuessr integrates with Google Street View, allowing users to explore their surroundings and use contextual clues to determine where they are.
If the player points within 20 meters of the starting location, he gets 5,000 points. The game lasts five rounds, so ideally you can get 25,000 points.
A world of possibilities
Popular speedrun games tend to have a clear structure. Players spend hours studying every detail of the game world or terrain maps. They know about all the bugs that can be exploited to save time or kill a boss instantly.
If a traditional speedrun implies a clear structure and organization, then GeoGuessr is its complete opposite. The idea is the same - to complete a round as quickly as possible or to score a certain number of points, but it is not like all other games. GeoGuessr is based on randomness, which is not found in any other game, not even Minecraft or Hades, where worlds are created randomly.
