A major transformation is about to arrive for all Europeans, starting on June 28, 2025 , the European Accessibility Act (EAA) will come into force .
This regulation will make digital products and services accessible to all people, including those with disabilities.
Until now, web accessibility was primarily mandatory for public institutions, but starting in 2025, the private sector will also be required to comply with these requirements .
What is the European Accessibility Act?
The European Accessibility Act (EAA) is a European directive passed in 2019 that seeks to ensure that digital products and services are accessible to all people, including those with disabilities.
Starting June 28, 2025, its implementation will be mandatory in all EU member states. This means that thousands of websites, apps, e-commerce platforms, digital products, and physical devices will have to meet minimum accessibility standards.
Why is the EAA so important?
Beyond regulatory compliance, this law responds to an urgent ethical and social need: more than 87 million people in Europe live with some type of disability. Many of them face daily obstacles to accessing basic online services: reading the news, shopping online, watching a video, banking, or booking a trip.
Ensuring access to digital products and services isn't just a technical or design improvement. It's digital justice.

Accessibility as a human right
The EAA is based on principles enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ratified by the European Union. This convention establishes that all persons should have equal access to information, communication, and technology.
Denying such access is, in plain terms, a form of discrimination.
And we're not just talking about people with permanent disabilities. Anyone can benefit from accessible design: older adults, people with temporary injuries, users in difficult environments (such as direct sunlight or ambient noise), or even those learning a language.
Accessibility isn't just for others, it includes all of us.
